In 2007 the cost of employer sponsored health insurance programs increased an average of 6% (Carruth & Carruth, 2009). Total costs associated with lost productivity were estimated at 225.8 billion dollars, which translates to approximately 1,685 dollars per employee (Stewart, Ricci, Chee & Morgansein, 2003 as sited by Carrruth & Carruth, 2009). Researchers estimate that 50% of health care expenditures are attributed to preventable lifestyle behaviors, such as physical inactivity, overeating and poor food choices.
