Prevention Targeting Exercise and Healthy Nutrition

E-mail and web-based worksite exercise and healthy eating programming have been a cost-effective solution for targeting chronic disease prevention. There is substantial evidence supporting greater health benefits with increased physical fitness. For example, a recent ACSM study found high-intensity exercise significantly improved body composition, which resulted in reduced total abdominal obesity and lower risk of heart disease (Irving et al., 2008). Researchers Swain and Franklin (2005) found that improved cardiovascular fitness resulted in a corresponding 8% to 17% reduction in heart disease and all-cause mortality. Houmard et al., (2003) examined the effects of exercise duration, frequency and intensity on insulin sensitivity in physically inactive, overweight or obese men and women with dyslipidemia. At the end of six-month study the researchers concluded that weekly exercise duration and frequency was more important than intensity to improve insulin sensitivity. Slentz, et al. (2004) examined the effects of exercise on body weight, body composition and waist circumference in 182 overweight, physically inactive men and women. At the end of the 8-month study the researchers found significant improvements in all the exercising groups.

A Healthy Diet

The Dietary Guidelines for Healthy Americans encourages consuming fewer calories, becoming more active, and making wiser food choices. Healthy nutrition is important for reducing the risk factors associated with chronic disease and for managing body weight. In a 25-year meta-analysis of research for weight loss examining diet, exercise and a combination of diet and exercise interventions, the researchers concluded that either diet or a diet and exercise program would be the most beneficial for short-term weight loss. They also suggested that an exercise intervention be considered for maintaining or managing weight loss (Miller, Koceaja, and Hamilton, 1997).
